kVAR required = kW × (tan φ₁ − tan φ₂), where φ₁ is your present power factor angle and φ₂ the target. Taking a 100 kW load from 0.72 to 0.99 needs about 82 kVAR. Try the kVAR calculator.

Most plants target 0.95 to 0.99. Fixed capacitors sized for full load can push power factor leading when load drops, which is why an APFC panel switches steps in and out.
When a sizeable share of your load is non-linear: VFDs, UPS systems, rectifiers or LED drivers. Their harmonics can resonate with plain capacitors. Detuned reactors in series prevent that.
